The Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) has commenced a series of public hearings as part of its review process for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Report submitted by Mpatamanga Hydropower Limited on the proposed implementation of the Mpatamanga Hydropower Project in Neno District.
The series of public hearings began on Monday, 13th January, 2025, at the Neno District Council, where MEPA engaged with district stakeholders, including government officials, traditional leaders, and local organizations. The Authority has organized the public hearing sessions to provide an opportunity for the concerned stakeholders and affected communities to verify the contents of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report submitted to the Authority as well as allow stakeholders and the general public to voice their concerns, share opinions, and highlight any critical issues or omissions in the report. Additionally, this process is designed to promote transparency and accountability in the Authority’s decision-making process regarding the project, ensuring that all perspectives are considered and that the determination process is open and inclusive. The Authority is expected to meet communities from Neno and Blantyre Districts who are living in and close to the proposed project site. The final physical session will be held in Blantyre which targets the national stakeholders.
Mpatamanga Hydro Power Limited intends to construct a hydro power plant with a total generation capacity of 350 MW. The generated electricity will be delivered to the grid and is expected to enhance energy security in Malawi. The project is proposed to be implemented at Mpatamanga on the Shire River. The full report of the project can be accessed at Neno District Council. The report can also be accessed on the following website: http://www.mpatamangahydro.com
